Our History

Canco General Contractors, Inc. was formed in early 1986, when Canco President John D. Prahl, Vice President Kurt L. Denzel, and two area business leaders as investment partners, acquired the Tampa office of the Midwest based Carl A. Nelson Company. Today, under the total ownership of Prahl and management of Prahl and Denzel, the company enjoys an enviable reputation which allows the negotiation of over eighty-five percent of its contracts with only a small percentage from the invited bid market. The success the company has achieved in its Commitment to Client Satisfaction is best exemplified by the fact that multi-project relationships have been developed with over eighty percent of the clients for whom initial projects were contracted, with several now accounting for ten or more individual projects. Completed projects range from twenty construction rental stores for a national chain in four southeastern states, more than forty new auto dealerships and the expansion of another twenty, to thirty church projects, a 220,000 SF roof tile manufacturing plant, 300,000 square feet of buildings at the Florida State Fair, and numerous professional and manufacturing buildings. With the successful completion of the numerous church projects over the years the management felt a need for a portion of the company to be dedicated solely to church projects which led them to start Church Builders Southeast a division of Canco General Contractors. For more information on this division of the company please visit www.churchbuildersse.com.

While most of the firm's commercial, industrial, and institutional building projects have been in west and central Florida, in recent years projects have been completed across most of the Southeastern United States giving the company the opportunity to open a division office in Greenville, SC.  After having their main office in Tampa for many years, the company moved into new headquarters located in Plant City July of 2007. Canco projects include the construction of new buildings of all types and sizes, the renovation and expansion of existing facilities, and site development projects.

8,500,000 sq.ft. and Growing...

The steel building division of Canco represents Varco Pruden Buildings, one of the largest manufacturers of steel building systems, contracting over 8.5 million square feet of VP buildings since 1989. Varco Pruden Buildings is a subsidiary of BlueScope Steel Buildings, a highly respected conglomerate of companies with annual sales of nearly six billion dollars other Bluescope companies are Butler Buildings, HEI and Metalspan.  Canco earned the honor of being named the largest volume Varco Pruden builder in the country for 2007 and has been among their top 20 builders consistantly for many years.

A majority of Canco projects are completed on a Design-Build basis with the team approach (the Owner, the Contractor and the independent design firms) working to best meet the needs of the Owner. Under the Design-Build form of contracting the Contractor lends his expertise through the design phase knowing the quality and budgetary demands of the Owner. Once the project is designed and the cost estimating is completed, a contract under the typical fixed sum form which is used by most contractors can be executed or a Guaranteed Maximum Price/Shared Savings form that is used on most Canco projects, is executed. Under the GMP/Shared Savings form of agreement the project proceeds on a not to exceed price basis with the owner credited with the majority of the savings which may be realized through the construction phase of the project. Most of the projects shown within this web site were completed under the GMP/Shared Savings form of contract agreement.
