John Prahl named Builder of the Year for 2007

Canco General Contractors and its President and Owner John D. Prahl, received top awards and honors at the 2008 Annual Conference of Varco Pruden Buildings Company held in San Diego, California. For the first time since becoming a Varco Pruden builder in 1986, Canco was named the Largest Volume Builder in the U.S. for Varco Pruden, a leading manufacturer in the steel building industry with over 900 authorized builders in the country.

Canco sold 810,000 square feet of buildings of Varco Pruden buildings in 2007. Canco has purchased over 9,500,000 square feet of Varco Pruden buildings totaling $48,000,000. Canco was also awarded Hall of Fame awards for eight projects completed in 2007 with one of those projects being Canco’s new headquarters located on the north side of I-4 in Plant City, Florida.

Canco President and Owner  John D. Prahl was also honored by receiving Varco-Pruden’s most prestigious recognition for long time builders by receiving the “Legend In Steel” award.

This was only the fifth time in Varco Pruden’s 50-year history that this award has been presented and the first time ever to a Florida builder. A special video of John’s career achievements was shown at the meeting and he was presented with a bronze eagle.

Prahl’s involvement with Varco Pruden goes back to 1976 when he joined the company as District Manager and then became a Regional Sales Manager for the company through 1983. He then worked as Vice-President for an Iowa based builder of Varco Pruden Building’s until 1986 when he and partner Kurt Denzel, along with two investment partners,

bought a Tampa based general contracting firm and changed the name to Canco General Contractors, Inc. Prahl was Chairman of the President’s Advisory Board of Varco Pruden from 1997 through 1999 and was elected to a three-year term as Chairman of that Board again in 2006.

Canco has completed nearly 400 building projects over the years with a majority of those projects in Florida. They have also completed several projects in Georgia, Tennessee and the Carolinas which has led them to open a branch office in Greenville, SC. A majority of Canco projects in the early years of the company were for auto dealerships, in recent years their projects have centered mostly around church buildings, professional medical and office buildings and manufacturing buildings ranging in project size from $400,000 to nearly $10,000,000. Most Canco projects are built on a design-build basis with negotiated contracts. Revenues in recent years have been between $25 and $30 million.
